Learn how client-side processing, WebAssembly, and zero-upload architectures safeguard sensitive document data.

Understand browser-native file processing and privacy boundaries

Browser-native file manipulation executes entirely within the sandboxed memory of your local client environment. By leveraging WebAssembly and standard HTML5 File APIs, document transformations occur without sending file payload bytes across network sockets to remote servers. This architecture eliminates intermediate cloud storage, server-side retention logs, and data exfiltration exposure during transit.

While in-browser processing prevents server-side interception, users must still maintain responsible client-side hygiene. Local execution does not protect against compromised local environments, screen recording software, or unauthorized physical access to your device. When distributing processed files, inspect the exported document to ensure that private revision history, author identifiers, and embedded thumbnails are removed before sharing.

Distinguish between visual masking, sanitization, and encryption

A critical privacy vulnerability occurs when users visually obscure sensitive information by drawing black rectangles over document text. In digital PDF specifications, placing a vector shape or annotation over text does not remove the underlying character glyphs from the document content stream; anyone can highlight, copy, or index the concealed words. True digital redaction permanently deletes the underlying glyph coordinates and text streams from the page dictionary.

Document encryption and permissions security also have defined technical constraints. PDF standard security supports 128-bit and 256-bit AES encryption to enforce user access passwords. However, permissions passwords (which attempt to restrict printing or text copying) are client-enforced flags that some third-party PDF viewers ignore. For confidential legal, medical, or corporate documents, combine true content stream redaction with strong password protection.
